Linkfest ’09

As promised, I’m sharing some entries I’ve had sitting in my Instapaper account that may be of interest to you. Then again, some may not.

Let’s start with a nice piece by Will Leitch at Deadspin about Bill Simmons. As I’ve mentioned a few times, after taking a couple years off from the Sports Guy, I got back on the wagon this summer. I don’t read every column, but I’m reading them on a fairly regular basis. I listen to his podcast. And his new book is sitting on my shelf, waiting for the day I finally finish Infinite Jest. Leitch reflects on what Simmons has meant to sports journalism. It would be very interesting to see what the genre would look like had Simmons not come along. He was the perfect writer at the perfect time.

Here’s an amazing story. If you read only one of these entries, this should be it.

Lost in the Waves

Probably more than you ever wanted to know about toilet paper. I try to do my part to help the environment. But if a Greenie ever tells me that I’m killing the planet because I’m using too much toilet paper, blows might be exchanged.

Toilet Paper History: How America Convinced the World to Wipe

Isn’t it weird to think there are still some Nazis running around? I don’t mean pathetic white men who think the world is against them and dress up on the weekend to “reclaim” the country for their race. I mean people who followed Hitler in the 1930s and 40s. John Demjanjuk may or may not have been a Nazi. But this is a fascinating story.
